Most opal myths likely originated from popular literature in the 1800’s. In Sir Walter Scott’s novel Anne of Geierstein, the Baroness of Arnheim dies after her opal that had magical powers loses its color. That had people thinking opals brought on bad luck. 

Another possibility is that rumors about opals being bad luck started from other gemstone dealers spreading false rumors to protect or increase their marketshare.
